A man dressed in black, who is cooking beans, comments to the audience:

"My name is Virgil. I'm a coyote, not the animal -pendejos-, I’m a man to help illegals cross the border from Hell which is Mexico to the Heaven. We believe the United States is Heaven, but first one need to pass THE PURGATORY and pay the SEVEN DEADLY SINS IN THE BORDER. Well, only if you survive to cross the border.

This is the start of a new chapter of Dante, was deported for destroying the monument of a Confederate hero. He fell asleep while driving his new truck and knocked  down the monument, earning the hatred of many racists.

When he tried to cross the border again, now with walls 664 feet high, the same height as the Trump Tower, he realized that there was only one way to pass it.

But first one need to pass THE PURGATORY and pay the SEVEN DEADLY SINS IN THE BORDER.

In the PURGATORY, he is visited by seven demons in form of animals: a Peacock, THE PRIDE; a mountain goat, THE LUXURY; a toad, THE GREED; a viper, THE ENVY; a lion, THE  WRATH; a snail THE SLOTH and a pig, THE GLUTTONY.

By addressing his SEVEN DEADLY SINS, Dante purges all the bad things he did in life in order to enter purified and clean into paradise.

This is how they discover that he did not fall asleep while driving because he worked too much, due to  his Avarice; but because of a sodomite sin of Lust.

When at last Dante paid his sins and crossed the PURGATORY,  he arrives to his house and finds it empty. Only one rocking chair remains. He sits down and cries. All his family has been deported.

At that moment a member of the Klu Klux Klan arrives and kills him because he is  brown “Prieto” and for destroying the monument.

The narrator takes a machete and murders the KKK. The news is heard announcing the second civil war in the United States. The narrator with the machete dances to the song “Over the Rainbow”.

The performance its a mix of the Divine Commedy, the history of illegal immigrant Dante and the situation of the deportee in USA.

“NUESTRA VENGANZA SERA NUESTRO DESTINO OSCURO”

"Our Vengeance will be our dark destiny" El Brujo.

The performance its dedícated to all the illegals who lost their lives to cross the border; but especially for Claudia Patricia Gómez González, who was killed by a U.S. Border Patrol agent on Wednesday, May 23rd 2018.  She was only 19 years old.

Press:

"Edwin's Seven Deadly Sins in the Border is an important and severely uncomfortable performance for Asheville; unexpected when first considering a puppet show. Based on the the second Act of Dante's Divine Comedy, Purgatorio, Seven Deadly Sins in the Border shows Dante's spiritual journey from the U.S. manufactured 'hell,' in Mexico, up through a tortuous reflection of his own shortcomings as he tries to reach the 'Earthly Paradise' advertised in the United States. The comedy of salvation is revealed when the 'Earthly Paradise' promised by the American Dream is shown to be a cruel lie for the spiritual migrant. Edwin skillfully juggles a wide array of mediums including puppetry, dance, a sound installation and bilingual storytelling to communicate a sample of real experience in immigrating. Though most likely attended by a white liberal audience in Asheville, NC, this show will not console white sensibilities but demands that the audience learn, reflect on personal participation and then respond to the routine violence of U.S. immigration policy and bigotry that left 19 year old Claudia Gomez Gonzales dead this past May and many more migrants before and after. Emerging out of the current hostile atmosphere for immigrants in the United States, as he noted, 'it's a disturbing piece, but I think necessary in this moment.' This show is an important reminder for those of us who can ignore the violent institutions we benefit from."
